  uafields University Building Renovation Projects

Environmental Design Group has been involved in the redesign of the University of Akron's campus, one of Ohio's top state university.

The firm has provided both learning institutions consulting services and environmental remediation design services on renovations for a great many buildings on both campuses.

For the University of Akron, Environmental Design Group has provided renovation surveys for asbestos-containing materials and lead-based paint materials to characterize quantities, conditions and potential response actions.

Following the identification of the material, the firm was retained by Akron during the project design phase to produce specification sections and addenda for public bidding. Throughout each project, Environmental Design Group was heavily involved on behalf of the school. The firm facilitated client-contractor-architect communication on environmental issues and served in a trouble shooting role relative to potential production, coordination or regulatory problems.

Environmental Design Group's onsite services during the ACM and LBP hazard abatement included contractor oversight, air quality monitoring, inspection and documentation. The firm's highly skilled staff were routinely required to make proactive decisions and interface with clients, design firms and other trades, as well as, acted on behalf of the university's health and safety department to control potential problems.

The University of Akron has also retained the firm to conduct due diligence on a major facility it purchased for its campus expansion.

Environmental Design Group's thorough investigation of the facility followed three routes of inquiry:

  1. Updating a phase 1 environmental site assessment.
  2. Identification of hazards associated with or limiting occupancy and reuse of the facility, such as lead paint, asbestos-containing material, mercury lighting and PCB ballast identification.
  3. Conducting a phase II site investigation involving a shallow soil sampling program in order to evaluate risks associated with accepting the property given its long history of commercial and industrial use in a highly developed area.
Following the completion of the investigation phase, the firm provided summary recommendations that were used by the school in the negotiations for the property.
