Furnace Run Stream RestorationPerhaps the premier example of stream restoration in Northeast Ohio, Environmental Design Group conducted a two-year study and design process to solve the Furnace Run Reservation lake's siltation and stream degradation. The firm enhanced this popular natural area, located in historic Richfield Township, part of the Metro Parks serving Summit County, by recommending disconnecting the lake from all but the stream's base flows, while restoring the old channel to accept a percentage of base flows and storm flows. A flow splitter was designed for this purpose to maintain biological capacity in both the lake and restored stream. A detailed stream restoration study and construction design restore a stable stream alignment mimicking native characteristics upstream of the project. The lake was built during WPA days directly over a tributary that drains more than 2000 acres of watershed. Because of its position along the tributary, the lake has become a continual maintenance headache for Metro Parks. The restored stream and lake will fix the silt transport regime of the tributary, provide improved stream habitat, and improve lake water quality and stability for this scenic area. An education process
is planned beginning from when construction commences, and continuing through a monitoring program after construction.
Public agencies, environmental groups and the public will be invited to view progress and learn about the benefits of employing natural processes when dealing with watershed issues. |
