  I-71 Polaris Centers of Commerce

The Polaris Centers of Commerce is a 1,300-acre office retail development in the northern part of the City of Columbus, Ohio's state capital. Environmental Design Group has provided expert consulting services to the developer since the inception of the project in 1987.

Environmental Design Group designed the interchange with I-71, one of the first privately funded interstate interchanges in Ohio, as well as a major widening project on the interstate to support the interchange, and the internal street system development. We continue to provide design and construction management services for the development's basic infrastructure, including: streets; sanitary sewers; waterlines; storm water management facilities; surveying services in the form of property surveys; plats; topographic surveys and construction layout staking; and marketing materials and information for property management.

The firm has also provided site design and surveying services for many of the individual office and retail projects within the Polaris development. One of the more challenging site projects was the 83-acre Polaris Amphitheater. The amphitheater is a state-of-the-art outdoor entertainment venue. It seats 20,000 and can accommodate parking for almost 6,000 vehicles. The site, located west of I-71, spanned a creek and ravine, requiring sensitive grading operations. Portions of the parking lots were left in grass to help reduce and clarify storm water runoff, reduce the heat impacts of the paved services, and improve the overall look and feel of the complex.

The Polaris Centers of Commerce and the new freeway interchange not only have been great for Columbus' growth and prosperity, but they have been two key components in the rapid growth in the southern portion of Delaware County. Delaware County has become one of the ten fastest growing counties in the country, according to Site Selection Magazine, and it can thank Polaris for much of its economic development.
